Pixar is lined up to release the much anticipated “Monsters University” in June 2013. They have released a preview of the digital short that will preimer prior to the movie, “The Blue Umbrella“. The Wall Street Journal reports; “The film is about a blue umbrella that notices and fancies a red umbrella. Their budding attraction is interrupted by distance and the forces of nature, until objects on the street come to life to help them reunite.”
The idea behind the short film; “Unseld, a 36-year-old German native who has worked for Pixar since 2008, got the idea when he was walking in San Francisco one rainy day and he saw an umbrella lying in the gutter. “It was the saddest thing,” he said. “I stood there and wondered what had happened to him. I think that was when I got the idea of giving him a story.”
Many are wondering if this will be a new spin on the 1954 Disney short film “The Ballad of Johnnie Fedora & Alice Bluebonnet“. Another sweet love story about two hats who fall in love but are seperated by circumstances out of their control.
We’re eagerly awaiting to see if it is true umbrella love! Will you be headed to theaters to see Monsters University & The Blue Umbrella?

At TRAY6 we deal with umbrellas on a daily basis. You probably encounter umbrellas on a daily basis as well – even if they are just stored away for a rainy day. So we thought we’d release some fun little facts about the good ole umbrella that you may not have known before! Here’s a little history on how the umbrella got its name!
An umbrella or parasol is a canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. The term parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun; umbrella refers to a device more suited to protect from rain. Often the difference is the material; as some parasols are not waterproof. Parasols are often meant to be fixed to one point and often used with patio tables or other outdoor furniture. Umbrellas are almost exclusively hand-held portable devices; however, parasols can also be hand-held.
The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow (the Latin word, in turn, derives from the Ancient Greek ómbros [όμβρος].) The word “umbrella” evolved from the Latin “umbella” (an “umbel” is a flat-topped rounded flower) or “umbra,” meaning “shaded.”
Now you can impress your friends with some fun new trivia!
Fashion plays a large part in the inspiration behind the designs in our umbrellas. We often draw from styles we see gracing magazines and runways, as well as every day fashion. We then pull out all the aspects that we love and create some truly unique and exciting patterns that end up on our umbrellas. But occasionally its hard to go in the reverse order – how can you make your TRAY6 umbrella work for your fashion needs? With holiday weathering often leaning towards needing an umbrella to get you from venue to venue, don’t fall back on that bland and boring old umbrella you have laying around. Be fierce with fashion and check out some of our fantastic holiday party looks that work around some of our favorite printed umbrellas. Take a peek!
