We have to admit, each of these color choices are swoon worthy and we’re totally inspired. Yellows, greens, reds & blues, oh my!

With reports coming in from the devastation brought on by Hurricane Sandy we wanted to share some resources for being prepared for big natural disasters. Inclement weather can sneak up on us at any time and being prepared in advance is always beneficial.

Items to build a inclement weather kit:

• A fully stocked first aid kit
• A small tool box with basic tools (pliers, wrench, hammer, etc)
• Enough food & water to last 72 hours (enough for each person in your group – and don’t forget pets’ needs as well!)
• Can opener
• Prescription medication
• Copies of important documents (IDs, insurance, etc)
• Cash
• Blankets & sleeping bags (if heat goes out)
• Durable clothing
• Matches, flashlights & batteries
• Satellite phone (cell towers often become jammed during natural disasters)
• Battery powered radio
• Water proof containers to house documents, matches, etc
• Raingear such as a sturdy umbrella, rain coats, and rain boots.
• Maps that include the evacuation route, as well as where shelters & volunteer services can be found

So we thought we’d release some fun little facts about the good ole umbrella that you may not have known before! Here’s a little history on how the umbrella got its name!

An umbrella or parasol is a canopy designed to protect against rain or sunlight. The term parasol usually refers to an item designed to protect from the sun; umbrella refers to a device more suited to protect from rain. Often the difference is the material; as some parasols are not waterproof. Parasols are often meant to be fixed to one point and often used with patio tables or other outdoor furniture. Umbrellas are almost exclusively hand-held portable devices; however, parasols can also be hand-held.

The word umbrella comes from the Latin word umbra, meaning shade or shadow (the Latin word, in turn, derives from the Ancient Greek ómbros [όμβρος].) The word “umbrella” evolved from the Latin “umbella” (an “umbel” is a flat-topped rounded flower) or “umbra,” meaning “shaded.”
